Trey Parker And Matt Stone Say They’re Making A ‘Book Of Mormon’ Movie

By / 09.13.11

The Book of Mormon took home nine Tony Awards this year (including best musical) for its three creators: Trey Parker and Matt Stone (South Park) and Robert Lopez (co-writer of Avenue Q). So it makes sense that Parker and Stone have confirmed with EW their plan to adapt it as a feature film sometime after finishing the play’s national tour which kicks off in Denver, Colorado, next summer.

Perhaps most optimistically, all the key players are already in place to get production started with or without a major studio’s backing: Parker is already a director and they already have an in with producer Scott Rudin, who assisted with The Book of Mormon and who produced No Country for Old Men and The Social Network as well as two of Parker and Stone’s movies (South Park: Bigger Longer & Uncut, Team America: World Police).

As Matt Stone told EW, “A lot of Broadway teams would have to go team up with a Hollywood producer and bring on a Hollywood director, but Trey’s a director and Scott’s a great producer. We’ve all made movies. So it’s kind of cool, it can stay in the same family.” We’re not going to describe the specifics about that family in these pages, but suffice it to say our description ends with “The Aristocrats”.
