So Long, Andrew Breitbart

By 03.01.12

Bombastic conservative activist, political provocateur and web pioneer Andrew Breitbart died last night. According to Fox News, he had a history of heart trouble and collapsed while out for a walk late last night. He was 43.

More famously known as a fiery Tea Party activist, Breitbart helped Arianna Huffington create the Huffington Post, helped Matt Drudge shape and develop the Drudge Report, and launched his own empire of “Big” websites, all of which had a conservative bend to them: Breitbart.com, BigHollywood.com, BigGovernment.com, BigJournalism.com, and BigPeace.com.

Breitbart was also a frequent guest on cable news shows and often used Twitter to engage in online political debates. (His final tweet, in fact, has him calling someone who disagrees with him a “putz.”) He also drew media attention in 2009 when he took to Twitter shortly after Ted Kennedy’s death to call the former senator a “villain,” a “duplicitous bastard” and a “prick.”

Breitbart’s death was announced on his own Big Hollywood site

With a terrible feeling of pain and loss we announce the passing of Andrew Breitbart.

Andrew passed away unexpectedly from natural causes shortly after midnight this morning in Los Angeles.

We have lost a husband, a father, a son, a brother, a dear friend, a patriot and a happy warrior.

Andrew lived boldly, so that we more timid souls would dare to live freely and fully, and fight for the fragile liberty he showed us how to love.

Breitbart recently made news when he confronted a bunch of Occupy activists, accusing them of “raping people.” Video of the incident is below.

Though he and I rarely agreed on anything, I’m told through mutual friends that Breitbart was a good guy to call a friend and a loving husband and father. May he rest in peace.
