To be honest, having Mel Gibson at your side when you’re having a monumental celebrity meltdown isn’t the best idea these days. It’s only the latest funky fresh happening in the saga of Shia LaBeouf, a man who is more famous than ever for claiming not to be famous.
Gibson sat for an interview over at Indiewire (video here) to talk his career, troubled past and The Expendables 3. But the real treat is all the sympathy that poured out for the troubled LaBeouf:
“When I see someone like Shia LaBeouf with the bag on his head and stuff, my heart goes out to the poor guy. I think he’s suffering in some way,” Gibson said…
“People are in line to sort of point the finger at him and say that he’s this, that, or the other. It’s easy to judge. But I’m sure he’s going through some kind of personal, very painful, cathartic thing that he has to exorcise and get out there,” Gibson continued. (via)
If you take a moment to look back on Gibson’s long history of public antics, you’ll quickly realize the gravity of these quotes. Mel “I hope you get gang-raped by a bunch of n*****s” Gibson feels bad for Shia LaBeaouf.
The only way it could be better is if he came out to support Gary Oldman in some sort of wicked act of a snake swallowing itself. He finished off with this positive outlook for the future:
“He’ll probably play it out and come back … He’ll be all right. I actually like the kid. I think he’s good.” (via)
One can only hope this is all really some long form joke at this point and this is the final punchline. Trolling Mel Gibson was the goal from the very start and Daniel Clowes was in on the entire thing.
