20 Years Later, Robert Patrick Can Still Channel His Intense ‘Terminator 2’ Stare

The cold stare of the T-1000 from Terminator 2: Judgment Day is probably a lot of folks introduction to the work of Robert Patrick. It was a breakthrough role that packed a punch even though he rarely spoke throughout the movie. All thanks to his fearsome presence and killer actions.

Turns out that Robert Patrick can still pull off the T-1000’s signature look and even brought a little story along to Conan in order to show just how important it was in landing him the part:

“[James Cameron] didn’t let me read a script and I got to meet a guy, and they put me in a room and he said, ‘We’ll set up a camera and we just want to see you adlib and improv. We’ll see how you move, we want you to create this intense presence.’

And I said, ‘OK, I’ll do that. What you do is you put the camera on my back, I’m gonna stand out in front of the camera, and I’m gonna go for it.’ And I spun around and I looked into the lens, and evidently Jim saw that and was watching the audition tapes. It kinda freaked him out a little bit.”

You can get a look at some of the audition looks from behind the scenes of T2 below, just for comparison. Conan puts him on the spot a bit during this interview and I’d say he delivers, even if he’s a little bit wrinkled these days. Cool stuff.
