When you look at the The Suicide Squad cast (even without Tom Hardy), it almost feels as if you’re reading a blog post about someone’s dream cast. We really have come a long way from the days when comic book movies were considered a cash grab or beneath certain actors, and that’s a testament to the dimension of these roles as much as it is to the success of these movies.

If Will Smith wanted to just get paid, he could have signed up for the Independence Day sequel, called a press conference, and with a cigar in his mouth screamed, “Welcome to Earf… AGAIN!” But he didn’t. Instead, Smith apparently saw something in the role of Deadshot. And I’m sure the same can be said of Margot Robbie’s decision to play Harley Quinn, but according to a quick interview that the actress gave to MTV, she’s feeling a little intimidated by the prospect of being the first person to bring the Joker’s girlfriend to life in live-action.

“Yeah, I guess it’s intimidating because there’s obviously a lot of people I want to please, and a character I have to do justice,” Robbie said. “But it’s a challenge, I’m definitely up for it, and hopefully I don’t disappoint.”

Honestly, I can’t blame Robbie for feeling a little pressure. Besides questions about how Jared Leto will escape the long shadow of Heath Ledger’s Joker, the characterization of Harley Quinn may be the chief curiosity for fans as they anxiously wait for this film. Will Robbie have a chance to stand-out amongst the ensemble with a meaty and feisty role, or will she fade to the fringes while playing a one-dimensional vixen and accessory to Leto’s Joker character? How Harley is portrayed isn’t just important to the fans, though, it’s important to the actress who is playing her.

Margot Robbie grabbed a lot of positive attention for her role as Leonardo DiCaprio’s wife in The Wolf Of Wall Street, and Z Is For Zachariah seems to be getting the right kind of buzz at Sundance, but Harley Quinn is likely going to be the make-or-break performance that determines the trajectory of her career. Luckily, Robbie surely has a better idea of what the end product will look like, which explains why she was confident enough in her abilities and in that product to sign on, but until the rest of us are let in on the secret, the heat is going to be on.
