Kevin Smith has officially confirmed that Mallrats 2 is happening, and he is expecting to start shooting by May 2016.

In an interview with Shmonty of Rock 102 KMFA, Smith confirmed his lineup of projects will include Clerks III, Hit Somebody, Moose Jaws, and the rumored Mallrats 2.

Mallrats sequel, yes or no?”

“Umm…yeah.”

“Yeah?”

“(Laughs) Yeah, that’s the first time I said it, yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah, that’s what we’re working on.”

“So how far along is it in production, or is it just in early stages?”

“Umm, it’s half a script right now, and we’re pulling our loot together…By the time we get to May 2016, we’re going to be shooting.”

According to Smith, he decided to make the Mallrats sequel after doing some long thinking about what would be good for his career and what he thought would be fun to make. Mallrats fell into the latter category, and he said that he’s excited to return to Mallrats after 20 years.

Before the interview, Smith had hinted on Twitter that a Mallrats sequel was in the works, teasing “I smell a rat…”:

A Mallrats sequel could be really interesting if it addresses the slow death of mall culture in America. The subculture of people who spend their time hanging out at the mall is shrinking, and I don’t even know if Magic Eye is a thing anymore. Is it? Can anyone confirm if Magic Eye is still around, and if so, did anyone else never see that freaking sailboat? I feel your pain, Willam. I never saw that sailboat either.
