Avengers: Age Of Ultron is a mere weeks away from its theatrical premiere. We’ve already seen a number of Marvel standalone films that tie into the new release and at the recent press junket for the film, Collider sat down with Mark Ruffalo to discuss the possibility of a solo Hulk movie, something he said earlier this week that he was “completely interested” in.
As far as a Hulk movie, a standalone Hulk movie, Marvel doesn’t really have the rights to that yet. That’s still Universal’s property, so there’s that issue. That’s a big impediment to moving forward with that. Now I don’t think that’s insurmountable, by the way, but I don’t know where it’s going from here for me.
It’s a no-brainer that a standalone Hulk movie would be welcomed by the fans. The fact that Marvel would have to go through Universal adds one extra hurdle in the production process. It’s worth noting Marvel’s involvement in producing The Incredible Hulk, but Universal owns the distribution rights to any such film as of now, which probably stands as a conflict of interest to Disney, Marvel’s parent company.
Ruffalo also discussed the amount of movies he has left on his Marvel contract:
I think it’s four now, but that could always go further. That could include different—I could show up in another character’s movie; I could do Avengers 3 and 4; I could do a Hulk standalone; I could do a combination of those things. That’s four or five, I think.
At least we’ll get more of the big green guy on the big screen in the foreseeable future. Marvel’s Phase Three is already full, so if a solo Hulk movie does get put into play, it wouldn’t hit theaters until the 2020s.
