Other films have done it before, but Marvel has adopted the post-credits scene as part of their winning formula ever since Samuel L. Jackson popped up at the end of Iron Man. At this point, fans expect to get a little expansion of their beloved MCU after the credits finish rolling on a Marvel film. But, for Avengers: Age of Ultron, don’t stick around expecting something.
Joss Whedon explained to Entertainment Weekly his reasoning behind this.
“It didn’t seem to lend itself in the same way, and we wanted to be true to what felt right. The first rule of making a sequel is take the best moments and do something else. Don’t do the Indiana Jones gun trick again differently. Just go somewhere else. Don’t try to hit the same highs, because people will sense it.”
Whedon and the creative team behind Avengers just don’t feel like they can top the shawarma bit from the end of the previous film, but it’s not like they didn’t try. They just couldn’t come up with anything that could beat the Avengers post-script, so nothing is the choice instead. To clarify, there still will be a brief scene after the movie is finished — after the credits start rolling — but when the credits are through, that’s that. It’s a bit disappointing that a creative genius like Whedon couldn’t create something as good if not better than shawarma, but I guess you can’t force the creative process.
