It’s one thing to worry about something good from your childhood, like Ghostbusters, being rebooted. It’s another when it’s Jem and the Holograms, which, despite some damn catchy songs, was subpar even by cheap G.I. Joe and Transformers standards. The animated series, which aired from 1985 to 1988, is being turned into a feature-length film. Judging by the trailer, it’s more Disney’s Black Swan than it is Josie and the Pussycats (which I will endlessly defend).
The official plot description: “As a small-town girl catapults from underground video sensation to global superstar, she and her three sisters begin a one-in-a-million journey of discovering that some talents are too special to keep hidden.”
Jem will be played by Aubrey Peeples, with Stefanie Scott, Hayley Kiyoko and Aurora Perrineau filling out the rest of the band who get left in Jem’s shadow until the climax, when they join together and record a YouTube video, or something.
Reaction to the trailer has not been kind:
