The Judd Apatow and Amy Schumer comedy, Trainwreck, finally comes out next month, and while making the press rounds promoting his new book (which is out today), Apatow stopped by The Howard Stern Show and revealed that Stern himself was indirectly responsible for Trainwreck. Apparently, Apatow wasn’t a fan of Amy Schumer — never having heard more than a minute or two of her stand-up — until she was a guest on Stern four years ago.

Apatow said that he happened to be tuning in on his way to work, and ended up sitting in the car for an hour listening to Schumer — who he says was “really funny, really heartwarming, and really dark” — as she talked about her father, who is afflicted with multiple sclerosis.

He said that reaching out to work with Schumer was a leap of faith, as often times when he initiates a project, it doesn’t work out for one reason or another, whether it’s that the comedian can’t act or that the script falls apart. It didn’t take him long to figure out that Schumer was “the real deal,” as he said, and the rest is history.

You can listen to both Apatow’s interview this morning and the one Schumer gave back in 2011 about her father below. (Refresh page if media players don’t automatically load.)
