Sony May Be Getting Closer To Finding A ‘Spider-Man’ Director

Sony Pictures is finally getting close to beginning work on the new Spider-Man movie. While the actor who’ll be playing Peter Parker in this go-around hasn’t yet been announced (it’s really between Asa Butterfield and Tom Holland, reports Deadline), the studio’s looking for a director to helm this new take on the franchise.

Deadline‘s reporting that there are several filmmakers in talks to direct the multi-film series, which will give us an inside look at what Spidey was like in high school (trying not to make a joke about shooting webs here and failing miserably), and any one of them could be taking Parker through the horrors of puberty and superhero-dom.

From Deadline:

After a long vetting process, Sony Pictures and Marvel are zeroed in on the favorites,St Vincent helmer Ted Melfi and Warm Bodies’ Jonathan Levine. Still in contention are John Francis Daley & Jonathan M. Goldstein, the director-writers of the updated version of John Hughes’ Vacation.

Add one more name to that list: Jon Watts. If you haven’t heard of him, it’s because he’s done more commercials than films. In fact, his first feature, Cop Car, just debuted at Sundance. It’s gotta be good if he’s on the short list of directors to take over.

There’s no word yet on whether the director will also do the screenwriting, but according to Deadline, almost all the names on this list can pull together a script.
