Jake Gyllenhaal Shows How He Got Into Ridiculous Shape For ‘Southpaw’

It wasn’t that long ago Jake Gyllenhaal looked like this. In fact, it was the last movie he starred in, and to play Lou Bloom in the excellent Nightcrawler, Gyllenhaal had to drop 30 pounds. He’s since gained what he lost back, and then some (it’s called “pulling a Christian Bale”).

The Southpaw actor added 15 pounds of muscle for his role as Billy Hope, which he accomplished by doing six hours of boxing and 2,000 sit-ups every day. I did five this morning before giving up and watching Zodiac for the ninth time instead. He told Entertainment Tonight:

“I knew nothing about boxing when I started really. I knew that in order for me to pull it off in any way, I was just going to have to learn how to do it. When I set my mind to something I just won’t stop until I do it. It’s something I pride myself on. It’s something I hate about myself. By the end I felt like I could do it.”

That’s how I felt about finishing Sons of Anarchy, which coincidentally, was created by the same guy who wrote Southpaw, Kurt Sutter. He knows a thing or two about punishment.
