In Ellen Page’s coming out speech last year, she said, “I’m here today because I am gay. [Maybe] I can make a difference. To help others have an easier and more hopeful time.” Unfortunately, even with gay marriage legalized, Page and millions of others still don’t have it easy because of people like Ted Cruz. Both the presidential hopeful and Page were at the Iowa State Fair today, and the X-Men star confronted Cruz about his lack of pride (not Pryde).
Page asked Cruz about LGBT people being fired for being gay or trans and he said, “Well, what we’re seeing right now, we’re seeing Bible-believing Christians being persecuted for living according to their faith.” (Via)
As opposed to gay people being persecuted for just, well, living. Page accused the Texas senator of “discriminating against LGBT people,” to which Cruz, who said he didn’t want to have a back-and-forth debate in front of obese people eating fried food on sticks, responded, “No one has the right to force someone else to abandon their faith and their conscience.”
[Cruz] then switched the standard narrative of a Christian florist denying wedding flowers to a gay couple. “Imagine, hypothetically, you had a gay florist and imagine two evangelicals wanted to get married and they decide, ‘You know what, I disagree with your faith and I don’t want to provide flowers,’” said Cruz. Ted Cruz strikes me as the kind of guy who uses the term “reverse racism” without a hint of irony. Anyway, Twitter’s collective dream of Ellen Page and Kate Mara on True Detective season two never happened, but you gotta admit, Clinton/Page 2016 has a ring to it…
