Universal Pictures Is Pretty Much Breaking All The Box-Office Records This Year

It’s been quite the year for Universal Pictures. Earlier this month, the studio broke a worldwide box-office record by becoming the first studio to gross $5.53 billion in one year. Now, according to Variety, the huge success of Straight Outta Compton will help Universal break the domestic box-office record by passing the $2-billion mark.

Not only does it look like the studio will break Warner Bros’ 2009 record of hitting $2 billion at the box office, the studio may just wallop the all-time record by hitting $2.1 billion before the year is done.

This achievement has been helped by the studio’s crazy successful slate of movies which not only includes the newly released NWA biopic and that cinematic behemoth Jurassic World, but also the year’s earlier releases of Furious 7, Minions, Fifty Shades of Grey and Pitch Perfect 2.

Nick Carpou — the president of domestic distribution at Universal — released a statement regarding this massive achievement:

“We knew that 2015 was going to be a special year, and were hopeful that our varied slate of franchise tentpoles, sequels and original films would resonate with audiences’ diverse moviegoing tastes. This milestone contributes to a win for our entire industry in a year that continues to see healthy growth and is on pace to be among the biggest ever. We applaud our friends and partners in exhibition, whose optimistic support has been essential to our success.”
