What’s Done Cannot Be Undone In The New ‘Macbeth’ Trailer

Now this is how you do Shakespeare. The trailer for Justin Kurzel’s Palme d’Or-nominated adaptation of The Scottish Play doesn’t pull any punches, throwing viewers straight into the action in the Highlands. All the witches are present and accounted for, as are the bloody battles, murders, and tortured psyches. Let’s just say that this is probably not a good choice for date night.

At this point in their careers, it is pretty much a given that Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard will give incredible performances, and Macbeth appears to be no different. Fassbender stars as the titular Macbeth, the usurper king of Scotland, and Cotillard is his raving-mad wife, Lady Macbeth. The classic tale is considered one of Shakespeare’s great tragedies, so we’ll see how Kurzel’s vision holds up. Hopefully it is an accurate adaptation, because high school kids will probably be using it to write their essays soon enough.

As summer is finally winding down and awards season is upon us, Oscar campaigns are starting to ramp up. We’ll see if Fassbender pushes for this film or the more marketable Steve Jobs, but either way, this could be his year. Macbeth is being released by The Weinstein Company on Dec. 4.
