Johnny Depp Was A Strong Candidate For ‘Pulp Fiction’ In Quentin Tarantino’s Leaked Casting Shortlist

What would have happened with Pulp Fiction if Johnny Depp played the role of Pumpkin instead of Tim Roth? Roth seemed so suited for the role that it’s hard to see anyone else playing that part, but if Quentin Tarantino’s initial plans hadn’t failed, we might have seen Depp playing a thief in the much-revered ’90s classic.

Tarantino’s alleged shortlist for Pulp Fiction leaked online in the past few days, and if it’s real (it might have come from Reddit, but it seems very authentic), it provides an interesting insight into the auteur’s mind. A few things that should be recognized: the role of Eric Stoltz’s Lance was originally written for John Cusack, Vincent was written for Michael Madsen, and Alec Baldwin and Gary Oldman were up for the role of Vincent, which was eventually played by John Travolta.

Oldman was in True Romance, which was a Tarantino script, but it would have been nice to see the two work together again, and although Michael Keaton wasn’t in Pulp Fiction — despite being recommended for several roles in this short list — the pair worked together in Jackie Brown. The list provides a nice fantasy roster of “what ifs.” What if Denzel Washington scored the role of Vincent? That probably would have been awesome. What about Nicolas Cage in the role of Lance? He would have definitely brought the crazy faces. There’s plenty more, so have fun with it. Check out the list below.
