Amy Schumer Has Apologized To Fans For A ‘Rookie Mistake’

Unlike many a celebrity, Amy Schumer rarely shies away from controversy — especially when she’s at the center of it. And as a rapidly rising, unapologetically feminist comedian, she’s at the center of it more than most. But whenever Twitter or the media or your dad get riled up about something the Schumer says or does, she almost always addresses it. Which is cool as hell, considering most public figures embroiled in controversy either pretend it’s not happening, send out a vague statement via their publicist, or demand that your dad call back during business hours.

Remember that time Schumer was accused of making a racist joke? She apologized for it, writing, “Once I realized I had more eyes and ears on me and had an influence I stopped telling jokes like that onstage. I am evolving as any artist.” More recently, Schumer was accused of stealing a bit from late comedian Patrice O’Neal — rather than get angry and defensive, she calmly explained that she’d never seen the set in question, but would check it out immediately.

Schumer’s now found herself the subject of another social-media firestorm: Audience members at one of her recent stand-up shows in Portland, Maine, are complaining that the comedian’s set felt “too short.” The Portland Press Herald reports that fans estimated the show ran 35-45 minutes only, and that later that night, Schumer performed another set that lasted an hour. One particular dude, who might be your dad, told the paper that he’s asking the Cross Insurance Arena for a refund on his $80 ticket.

For their part, the arena is all, “Um…we’ll get back to you.” But for her part, Schumer’s owning up to it and apologizing for her mistake. She tweeted about the show twice, explaining that she was asked to move more quickly than usual to make time for the later show.

In a phone interview with Portland TV station WCSH-6, Schumer said she felt “horrible” about the incident, but that the short show wasn’t a result of “laziness.” She explained that it was a “rookie mistake” that is “heavy on my mind.” She added, “I really appreciate that people spend money and they choose to spend their time with me. It’s a really big deal to me.”
