Andy Serkis Wants You To Go Ape In ‘War for the Planet of the Apes’

What level of ape actor would you rate yourself as? We’ve all stared in the mirror and asked ourselves this question, but only a select few of us have been able to flex those muscles on screen. Blessedly, Hollywood has finally offered an outlet for all of us would-be apes on the planet. Thanks, The Movies™!

A new contest is allowing an ordinary Joe or Jane to battle for a role in War for the Planet of the Apes. No fighting to the death is involved, but potential big screen apes are asked to submit a 30 second video where they give their best ape performance. If you’re the best in the bunch at going ape you’ll be sent to Canada, where you’ll be plunked in motion capture gear and appear in the movie. They might even feed you. We don’t know. We don’t work for 20th Century Fox.

The contest has a snazzy promo video featuring the film’s director Matt Reeves and motion capture supergod Andy Serkis selling you on the value of entering this competition. Serkis wears some fancypants motion capture stuff in the clip so you don’t confuse him for a grip or best boy.

War for the Planet of the Apes is due out in 2017 and boasts a cast that includes Serkis, Judy Greer, Woody Harrelson, Steve Zahn, Gabriel Chavarria, and you — if you’ve got the chops. Y’know, provided this contest isn’t just a ploy to blackmail people with their own terrible ape impression videos.
