An Anonymous ‘Wizard Of Oz’ Fan Bought Dorothy’s Dress For $1.5 Million

Say some eccentric rich person (when you’re rich, you’re eccentric; when you’re poor, you’re a weirdo) gave you her credit card to spend on a useless piece of movie memorabilia — what would you buy? Nicolas Cage’s bottled tears from Vampire’s Kiss? The steaming pile of dinosaur poop from Jurassic Park? Biff’s sports almanac from Back to the Future II?

I have a good feeling the Chicago Cubs are gonna sweep Miami in 2015!

For one buyer, it was Dorothy’s blue and white dress from The Wizard of Oz, which went for a cool $1.5 million during an auction at Bonhams in New York. It was only expected to fetch between $800,000 and $1.2 million.

Several dresses were created for Judy Garland to wear in the film. Some she did not wear during filming; they are referred to as “test” dresses. One such costume was sold at Bonhams last year for $245,00. (Via NPR)

This isn’t the first piece of memorabilia from The Wizard of Oz, which cost $2.7 million to make, that went for more than $1 million at an auction. Someone bought Bert Lahr’s Cowardly Lion costume for $3 million last year. If that seems like a lot of money, that’s because it is. Much better to spend your eccentric-rich person dough on getting Clarence the Cross-Eyed Lion the laser-eye surgery he so desperately needs.
