James Gunn Quickly Shot Down Those ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2’ Rumors

Well, that didn’t take long. We reported earlier today about a rumor regarding Peter Quill’s parentage in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, but director James Gunn quickly took to Facebook to nip it in the bud. In a lengthy post about the nature of spoiler culture, Gunn makes it clear that a.) it wasn’t true, and b.) chill out, you nerds.

All right. From this moment on I’m going to stop commenting on any rumors surrounding Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, because, eventually, someone is going to come up with a spoiler that has some truth to it. That said, the rumors surrounding Quill’s parentage at the present moment are completely false, and aren’t even close to the truth. I don’t know how people come up with this stuff, but it certainly isn’t through legitimate sources.

Gunn continued by tasking fans to just wait and see the completed film and experience it as its meant to be experienced, instead of speculating about everything that may or may not happen. Prepare to feel thoroughly chastened.

I get the desire to get “scoops” on character inclusion and casting choices, etc. But since when is a plot spoiler a “scoop”? Is this really what fandom wants to know? Plot details in movies ahead of time? I got in this business because I love movies, and I think most film journalists are the same way. And spoiling plot details doesn’t add to the enjoyment of the film-going experience.

The whole post is worth a read, but at this point Gunn is swimming against the tide. Spoiler culture is the name of the game these days, and people are going to speculate until the after credit scene rolls and and then plenty more beyond. Still, asking for a bit of courtesy isn’t a bad thing at all. He’s creating something that we all want to see, so let’s leave him to it.
