Here’s How Val Kilmer Confused Fans With His Announcement About ‘Top Gun 2’

Is Val Kilmer a go for a sequel to Top Gun? The actor revealed on Facebook that he’s been offered a part in the potential part two of the ’80s blockbuster, although his original post on the subject led a hearty portion of fans to believe his participation was a total done deal.

Does it sound confusing? Well, that’s sort of because it is. Here’s the text of Kilmer’s original post on the matter:

“I just got offered #topgun2 – not often you get to say ‘ye'” without reading the script…
“It’s starring Gene Hackman…”
“Yes” “The director is Francis Coppola…” “Yes!”

Jerry Bruckheimer and Tom Cruise!!! “Yes.” We will all miss Tony Scott one of the kindest gentlemen I’ve ever met in the film biz, but let’s fire up some fighter jets again!!!”

Some fans read this post as a “whooooahhhh” moment where it looked like a lock that the Iceman was coming back and maybe Gene Hackman and Francis Ford Coppola were on board, too. (Imagine the beach volleyball scene!) It’s the sort of thing that would understandably work fans up into a lather.

Kilmer saw the commotion his social media update was causing and had to clarify things a bit. In an updated version of the post, he noted that Hackman and Coppola were not involved in the project. He just mentioned them as being people like Bruckheimer and Cruise that you wouldn’t dream of saying no to. He also stressed to fans that he was simply offered the role and that he “jumped the topgun” in the way he framed things.

This is a long way off so calm down. This has been talked about for a long long time and being offered a role is very different from doing a role. I jumped the gun with my post. I jumped the topgun… An innocent mistake. It was just such a wonderful phone call with my agent…

The comment section for that post also kinda morphed into an impromptu fan question/comment extravaganza for the 55-year-old actor. It’s a fascinating read with Kilmer addressing everything from his hopes for the project to politely dealing with skeptics that don’t think he’s trim enough to get into his Iceman gear. Oh, also he’d like you to know his health is fine, thank you very much.

Tom Cruise hasn’t officially signed on to appear in Top Gun 2, but Skydance Productions has insisted that “there is no Top Gun without Maverick, and it is going to be Maverick playing Maverick.” Considering that the production company has worked with Cruise before, it’s not too unreasonable of a stretch to think he could be a go for another flight.
