Astronauts On The International Space Station Were Sent ‘The Martian’ Just In Time For Christmas

Pass the freeze-dried Raisinettes — The Martian has returned to the International Space Station for another screening.

As a special holiday treat from NASA and Fox Home Entertainment, this Ridley Scott motion picture was transmitted to the astronauts aboard the ISS. Y’know, because there’s no better way to really lean into holiday joy than by seeing Matt Damon fighting for survival on Mars. (Or maybe someone already rented out Fred Claus at NASA.)

This week’s arrival marks the second time The Martian has been made available for a ritzy space station screening. The film was previously shown back in September ahead of its theatrical release. NASA (who has been pretty chummy and collaborative with the film throughout its production and marketing) can be a bit stingy when it comes to movies that would like an ISS showing, mind you. Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar was said to be sniffing around for an International Space Station premiere back in 2014, but the film was rejected in that request.

Here’s hoping these courageous astronauts use their big nerdy science brains to figure out how The Martian could fall into the “musical or comedy” section at the Golden Globes before this year’s ceremony happens. No one on Earth can explain how this happened, so here’s hoping the truth can be discovered in space.
