The Third ‘Cloverfield’ Installment Is Reportedly On The Way And It Is Taking Terror Into Space

If you enjoyed the direction the Cloverfield series took with 10 Cloverfield Lane, you’re going to be a very happy camper for the foreseeable future. According to an exclusive over at The Wrap, the next installment of J.J. Abrams anthology series — currently known as God Particle — is on the way and the plans for the future should keep the train rolling:

Not only will “Particle” be the third in a series of connected “Cloverfield” films, but Abrams and studio partner Paramount Pictures are quietly developing more movies for the shared universe, the individual said. Both parties hope to release a new film in the shared “Cloverfield” each year, the insider added.

The next film is aiming for a February 24, 2017 release and ditches the aliens on the planet to take the frights directly to them in space — I am aware the giant creature in the original wasn’t an alien, but it was awakened by an object from space. The theme is there. Much like 10 Cloverfield Lane, the story will be self-contained with some of those shared thematic elements we’ve seen in the other two films:

“Particle” is about a team of astronauts who make a “shocking discovery” and end up fighting for survival in what is described as an altered reality. Julis Onah (“The Girl Is in Trouble”) directed from a script by Oren Uziel. It stars David Oyelowo, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Ziyi Zhang, Elizabeth Debicki, Daniel Brühl and Chris O’Dowd.

Slashfilm adds that the astronauts will discover something that “challenges all they know about the fabric of reality,” which gives me a few ideas of where this could go. Actually it’s just one idea and I’m hoping someone is thinking the same thing:

That’s right, a Critters 4 remake. Tiny monsters in space causing mayhem and eating people down to their skeletons like piranhas. Tiny hairy piranhas with evil eyes and a franchise of films under their belt. If they want to make it “smart” like Interstellar, that’s fine. We have room for a “smart” Critters movie.
