The Wrap (and several other outlets) are reporting that Ryan Coogler has entered negotiations to direct Marvel’s Black Panther. Although I’m a little bummed Ava Duvernay turned it down, Coogler is a solid choice. Anybody who’s seen Creed or Fruitvale Station knows he has a good visual style and (perhaps most importantly) can shoot an awesome fight scene.

We already know Black Panther (played by Chadwick Boseman) will be introduced in Captain America: Civil War, where both Cap and Tony will be trying to get his support (and we probably know who he’ll side with).

Coogler has been rumored (by Birth.Movies.Death and Heroic Hollywood) to be a director Marvel was considering, but the expectations-exceeding opening weekend for Creed seems to have stoked Marvel’s interest. Black Panther will open July 6, 2018.
