Matt Damon and director Paul Greengrass are finally returning to the Bourne franchise next year, after the disappointing spin-off, The Bourne Legacy, failed to launch a new Damon-less Bourne. With filming about half way over, they’re leaving the chems behind, and it looks like Jason Bourne will be facing his most modern enemy yet: cyber warfare.
Damon spoke with Entertainment Weekly about how different the world looks in this new installment in the franchise.
“There’s been the financial collapse, the great recession, all these issues of cyberwarfare and civil liberties… We find him in a dark and tortured place.”
While cyberwarfare will certainly be new for the series, “dark and tortured” sounds about right. No one would ever have described the amnesiac rogue agent as “sunny and carefree.” I guess he wasn’t able to happily live off the grid with Julia Stiles after all.
All kidding aside, hopefully this will be a return to form for the franchise. Few spy films have been able to balance seriousness with excitement quite as well as Bourne, and usually attracts some top notch talent. We’ll just have to wait until July 29 to see if it’s a triumphant return for Jason Bourne.
