The New ‘Star Wars’ Cantina Song Was Written By ‘Hamilton’ Creator Lin-Manuel Miranda

The one question about Star Wars: The Force Awakens on everyone’s mind has nothing to do with Luke Skywalker or whether BB-8 will be as adorable as we hope it (she?) is. It’s: Have Figrin D’an and the Modal Nodes padded out their setlist? They’re, of course, the band that plays that one song, “Mad About Me” (it’s about Helen Hunt), in the Mos Eisley Cantina. The Nodes are the Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble of the Stars Wars universe — a technically proficient bar band whose every song sounds the same, because it is.

But good news! There’s going to be new Cantina music in The Force Awakens, thanks to director J.J. Abrams seeing Hamilton, Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Broadway musical that literally everyone on the face of this planet has demanded you MUST see. “No, really, Hamilton will change your life.”

Ah yes, that ol’ Hollywood chestnut: writer of hit Broadway musical about the first secretary of the U.S. treasury offers to write a song, performed by weird-looking aliens to entertain cranky drunks in a space-bar, for the director of a sci-fi movie owned by Disney. That’s how Pete’s Dragon came to be, too.

No word yet on whether the song will be performed by Figrin D’an and the Modal Nodes, who are currently on tour with the Sy Snootles Experience.
