Charlize Theron Hasn’t Heard Anything About ‘Mad Max: The Wasteland’

In an interview with USA Today about her latest film, Imperator Furiosa herself had no idea what Mad Max: The Wasteland was and is definitely not signed up yet to be in it.

Tom Hardy claims to be signed for three more films. Director George Miller has said in the past that he has written a standalone Furiosa story, so it’s entirely possible for Theron to be signed for her own spin-off franchise down the road. Currently, though, it doesn’t look like she’s being included in Mad Max: The Wasteland.

It’s been a while since I’ve seen the first couple of Mad Max films, but, from what I can remember, none of the characters except Max are recurring. Sure, there have been the same actors appearing more than once — like Hugh Keays-Byrne playing two different villains in two different movies — but I didn’t expect, nor did I think anyone else would, that people from Fury Road would be reappearing in a fifth Mad Max film.

The more upsetting news is that Warner Bros. is still on the fence about whether there will even be a fifth film. Fury Road earned almost $370 million worldwide, on a $150 million budget, which sounds pretty tremendous. Of course, that’s not Minions money, but also I don’t want to stab my eyes out every time I see a Mad Max meme on my news feed. It doesn’t seem like that’s enough goodwill to immediately greenlight a sequel, though. The studio probably also expects to revisit Theron’s character and The Citadel in order to cash in on the thing people really liked the most about Fury Road.
