The Latest ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2’ Concept Art Features A Giant Space Kraken

When he’s not busy watching Bachelor in Paradise like a mad man, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 director James Gunn spends his time littering the internet with teases from his next Marvel film. He offered fans a first look at the new team with a bit of concept art from the Guardians of the Galaxy sequel ahead of July’s San Diego Comic-Con. This time, however, Gunn went even further and threw a giant space kraken into the mix.

As Gunn explained on Twitter, the “first digital look” came from Empire magazine’s latest issue:

The image features a massive battle between the first five members of the team (Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket and Baby Groot) fighting a giant, many-tentacled monstrosity displaying at least three separate rows of teeth. The newest members of the squad (Nebula, Yondu and Mantis) are nowhere to be found, which suggests the scene pictured — if it even makes it into the final cut — probably occurs early in the film.

So what exactly is this thing? When asked about the creature’s name, Gunn called it an “abilisk” but offered no further details:

Slashfilm didn’t find an immediate connection to the comics, and a cursory search of Marvel Database revealed nothing. Yet published descriptions of footage shown only to the Hall H audience at SDCC suggest this antagonist might be the “inter-dimensional beast” Gamora refers to their being hired to fight.

Or maybe Gunn was just joking with everyone, and it’s actually a space kraken.
