An #ImWIthHer Tweet From The ‘Ghostbusters’ Twitter Account Caused A Major Fuss

The all-female reboot of Ghostbusters has been controversial since day one, with people insisting throughout the movie’s inception that casting all women ruined a beloved classic. This didn’t stop after the movie came out, with Breitbart reporter Milo Yiannopoulos writing sexist tweets about the film’s actresses, with his fans then harassing Leslie Jones after she spoke out against it. And now the Ghostbusters twitter account has generated even more criticism for hashtagging one of its recent tweets with #ImWithHer, which is commonly used to show support of Hillary Clinton online.

According to The Wrap, on Tuesday, the account posted a tweet saying, “Boo-yah, we smashed your glass ceiling. There was a ghost behind it.” One of the hashtags was #ImWithHer. This tweet apparently proved to Ghostbusters naysayers that the movie was explicitly anti-male and with a political agenda. After deleting the tweet, Sony had to release a statement specifically defending it against those claims.

“The tweet was never intended to be a political endorsement,” a spokeswoman for Sony told TheWrap. “It was a shout-out to our own glass ceiling-busters,” referring to stars Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones.

That’s a plausible explanation, given the dearth of movies starring women in Hollywood. To be honest though, the tweet does seem to reference Hillary Clinton, not only with the hashtag and the glass ceiling reference, but by using McKinnon’s picture, since she does a popular impression of Clinton on Saturday Night Live. In this way, the tweet could be read as political, which isn’t a great move when you’re promoting a movie. Perhaps the tweet was celebrating Clinton’s achievement of getting close to becoming the first female president. That shouldn’t read as anti-male, and it’s sad that it still does in 2016.

And while the original tweet isn’t up, there are some celebratory tweets in reply to Sonny Bunch’s screenshot.

So, in case you were wondering, people still hate the rebooted Ghostbusters because of its so-called feminist connotations.
