Jude Law Will Be The Young Dumbledore In The Next ‘Fantastic Beasts’ Film

Jude Law lately made waves playing the Pope in HBO’s bizarre series The Young Pope. And apparently he intends to make a career of playing relatively youthful authority figures, because he’s been confirmed as the young Dumbledore in the next Fantastic Beasts sequel, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Fantastic Beasts, of course, is the Harry Potter prequel series taking place in the 1920s as Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) finds beasts, intrigue, and lots of Harry Potter easter eggs in North America. This is particularly interesting because J.K. Rowling has revealed that Dumbledore had a few defining moments when he was young, including falling out of love with the dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald as his dark side was revealed, and a devastating family tragedy. As Rowling confirmed fan suspicions Dumbledore was gay, it seems the sequel will be exploring that past a bit.

As the original foursome in the first movie are all coming back, it seems likely Dumbledore will have limited screen time this go round, Grindelwald as the main antagonist or not. But Potterheads are always curious about nuggets from Dumbledore’s past, and besides, that gives us the perfect opportunity to share more Young Pope bits.

We’re just saying, Warners, let Law go full Young Pope and you’d have a very unique movie. Especially considering Dumbledore’s brother and his questionable interest in livestock.
