Will The Lonely Island’s ‘Popstar’ Be This Generation’s ‘Zoolander’?

Did you catch the trailer for the Lonely Island’s movie Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping?

It’s hilarious. The movie looks very solid. And it brings to mind another intensely funny movie about a celebrity who operated without a clue: Derek Zoolander.

Yes, Popstar could be this generation’s Zoolander (the original, not the mega-bomb of a sequel that entered and then exited the public consciousness a few weeks ago without the slightest whiff of relevance). Both movies are about a fictional male pop culture icon who, to be kind, isn’t very bright, both are teeming with celebrity cameos and both featured a trio of comedy actors working at the top of their games, Zoolander with Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson and Will Ferrell and Popstar with Andy Samberg and his Lonely Island cohorts Jorma Taccone and Akiva Schaffer.

But back to those cameos for a second. In the Popstar trailer we’re treated to a handful, including Simon Cowell, Carrie Underwood, Usher, Adam Levine, Snoop Dogg, Bill Hader, Martin Sheen, Sarah Silverman and more. Zoolander featured the likes of Natalie Portman, Gwen Stefani, Vince Vaughn, Christian Slater and the late, great David Bowie to name just a few.

The similarities between the two movies appear uncanny. Check out the video above and see for yourself.
