Matthew McConaughey Fights His Own Civil War In The Trailer For ‘Free State of Jones’

If you’ve heard the whisper of “alright, alright, alright” in the past 24 hours, don’t freak out. It’s just the universe letting you know that we have a time-traveling Matthew McConaughey on our hands.

The 46-year-old Academy Award winner is front and center in the freshly debuted trailer for the upcoming Civil War action-drama Free State of Jones. Directed by Seabiscuit helmer Gary Ross, the motion picture features McConaughey taking on the role of real life historical figure Newton Knight and his efforts leading a rebellion against the Confederacy. This first look at the film leans heavy into the action side of the action-drama equation with guns blazing and a pretty sweet ambush scene tucked into the preview. Bonus points should be awarded for the end portion that has McConaughey doing the sneering movie tough guy walk with roaring flames in the background.

Due out on May 13th, Free State of Jones boasts a swell cast. In addition to McConaughey, the film also features The Americans star Keri Russell, Concussion actress Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Hunger Games vet Mahershala Ali. Mind you, McConaughey’s face is the only one you’ll find on the poster. It’s a pretty intense face too!
