Mel Gibson Has A Message For His Younger Self: ‘Shut The F*ck Up’

Actor and director Mel Gibson hasn’t had the best decade for many, well-documented reasons. Hence why our own Mike Ryan asked Hacksaw Ridge star Andrew Garfield about his decision to work with Gibson the film, and whether or not these past incidents played a role in his thinking. The Amazing Spider-Man star said he “met Mel before committing” to the project and, after becoming “very, very comfortable” with the prospect of working with Gibson, agreed play the lead.

The 60-year-old’s past mistakes were also key to a “Big Questions With Even Bigger Stars” segment he filmed with Late Show host Stephen Colbert on Tuesday. “If you could go back in time,” the comedian asked, “what would you tell your younger self?” Gibson’s answer didn’t disappoint:

“Don’t be so caught up in the little things. Take advantage of all the gifts the world has to offer, and live every day to the fullest. I’d also tell myself, my younger self, to shut the f*ck up.”

The humorous response earned a round of applause and cheers from the studio audience, as did an earlier (and related) question from Colbert about whether Gibson had any past regrets. “No, not one,” Gibson answered. “They tend to come in clusters.”
