While superhero movies and Star Wars take up the lion’s share of marquee sci-fi cinema, there are some lower key gems making their way into theaters lately. Last year gave us the incredible Ex Machina, and earlier this year saw the release of the gripping Midnight Special. Later this year will see the release of Amy Adams’ Arrival, so while we may be suffering from superhero fatigue, this really is a good time to be a sci-fi fan.
However, first on deck is the new “we should have thought this science through” thriller, Morgan. Boasting an impressive cast including Kate Mara, Toby Jones, Michelle Yeoh, and Brian Cox, Morgan is about a group of ambitious scientists who create Morgan, who looks human but it something else all together. When things go sideways, as they always do in films like this, Mara’s corporate fixer is sent in to deal with the situation and contain the asset. From the looks of the trailer, that goal will be harder than expected to achieve.
Produced by Ridley Scott and directed by his son, Luke, Morgan could be the smart thriller that we need to save us from a worse than usual summer movie season. Look for it when it’s released on September 2nd.
