A Number Of Prince Artifacts From ‘Purple Rain’ Are Going Up For Auction

A homemade approximation of Prince’s iconic Purple Rain outfit hangs in my closet. It cost me roughly $15 in materials. I’m willing to bet that the actual outfits from the movie will sell for at least twice that when they go up for auction on eBay on July 1.

Prince’s motorcycle jacket and the signature ruffled shirt he wore during the film’s closing concert are both scheduled to go up for sale. The bid for the jacket he wore while scooting out to Lake Minnetonka starts at $6,000 while the shirt starts at $3,000. Bonus points: the leather jacket includes pit stains, presumably from the (black) sweat of The Purple One himself.

The two items are up for sale as part of Hollywood Auction 83, a three-day long event that begins on June 29 in which hundreds of props and outfits will be up for sale.

It’s been a big week for memorabilia from late legends. A snipped lock of David Bowie’s hair sold for $18,750 and Prince’s famous yellow cloud guitar snagged $137,500 from Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay.

Fans have been clamoring for pieces of Prince’s legacy since his death earlier this year. The rush to catalog everything Prince even led to his legendary vault being opened and plans to turn his Paisley Park compound into a Graceland-style museum.
