Every single celebrity in The Beverly Hills Hilton knew what they were getting into with Ricky Gervais back and grinning maniacally as the host of the 2016 Golden Globes. Things would be said, jokes would be made, and the cuts would be deep. But that’s just the way Ricky operates, and they signed up for it!
After a typically raunchy opening monologue from the creator of The Office, there was no telling where Gervais would go next. Would he start to ease up on his fellow celebrities? Are they his fellow celebrities? They may be his foes now, but I digress…
As the show went on, the nastiness from the Brit cae fast and loose. Ultimately, Ricky reached for the lowest-hanging fruit possible when Matt Damon made his way to the stage. Of course, where Matt Damon goes, a Ben Affleck joke follows. Or at least a Boston accent joke about apples. But this quip maybe went a little too far when Gervais called out the soon-to-be Bruce Wayne by saying Matt Damon was the only person he’s ever been faithful to. It’s well-known that Affleck has broken the hearts of many by stealing the hearts of even more celebrities and, ahem, other entertainers.
