Simon Pegg Says An Alien In ‘Star Trek Beyond’ Was Inspired By Jennifer Lawrence

It’s easy to forget, considering all the Star Wars news today (including a Rogue One sizzle reel and The Force Awakens‘ TV debut), but Star Trek Beyond comes out next week. The third Trek reboot and 13th overall film in the franchise is projected to make “between $48 million and $60 million” during its opening weekend. That’s better than Ghostbusters, but way, way, way below what The Force Awakens pulled in ($238 million!) last December. Maybe this will help bring in some extra dough: according to Simon Pegg, who stars in and wrote Beyond, one of the new aliens in the film was inspired by Jennifer Lawrence.

Harrison Ford would be jealous, if he gave a sh*t.

In a press conference earlier this week, Pegg revealed that the mysterious Jaylah (played by The Mummy‘s Sofia Boutella) was originally nicknamed “Jennifer Lawrence in Winter’s Bone.” Does she also skin a squirrel? Possibly, but the moniker mostly had to do with Jaylah being thick-skinned and independent. Eventually, “Jennifer Lawrence in Winter’s Bone” became “J. Law,” which was, presumably for legal reasons, then changed to “Jaylah.”

Boutella said of Jaylah, “She comes from a very strong race of aliens — physically, extremely strong. She’s quite defensive, very much on her own, and she’s been protecting herself.” OMG, and she’s, like, so relatable, too.
