‘Star Trek Beyond’ Heads To Reshoots As Problems Surface And New Cast Is Added

Poor Trekkers/Trekkies. It hasn’t exactly been wedding cake and warm feelings heading into Star Trek Beyond, has it? Mixed feelings on December’s Star Trek Beyond trailer have hurt the momentum of the upcoming threequel a bit, so why not keep the party going with another development that might raise some questions about the film? Reshoots are on the way and a new actress (but a really freaking good actress) is a very late addition to the cast.

Yes, there’s still that July 22 release date staring back at the USS Enterprise, but that hasn’t stopped Emmy-minted thespian Shohreh Aghdashloo from hopping aboard Justin Lin’s sci-fi blockbuster-in-waiting. Deadline reports that Aghdashloo has been tapped as the High Command of the Federation, a job that probably has an awesome benefits package.

Reshoots are said to be starting next week which is the sort of thing that might strike fear in the hearts of some fans (“what’d they do wrong?”) while inspiring optimistic exuberance in others (“what awesomeness are they gonna add?”). Or maybe the reshoots are just an excuse for Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and Zoe Saldana to hang out with Shohreh Aghdashloo and tell her she was great in House of Sand and Fog. It’s all a mystery at this point.

The latest installment in the rebooted Star Trek saga hasn’t given too much away about what’s to come, but there’s the promise of Idris Elba being awesome this go-around and co-writer Simon Pegg has reassured fans that the action-driven trailer doesn’t paint the full picture of what’s to come, so let’s not be too glum about anything until this space puppy hits theatres this summer.
