‘Star Wars: Rogue One’ May Bring Peter Cushing Back To Life Via CGI To Play Grand Moff Tarkin

When the Star Wars: Rogue One cast was officially announced last weekend, discussions among many a Star Wars fan included speculation if Wilhuff Tarkin would be making an appearance. The new Gareth Edwards-directed anthology film will tell the story of a group of rebels out to steal plans to the Death Star and, given the plot details revealed, it would only make sense to have Grand Moff Tarkin somewhere in the film.

Now, the Daily Mail is reporting that, with the help of some presumably costly CGI work, the production is set to bring horror movie icon Peter Cushing — who passed away from prostate cancer in 1994 — back from the dead to reprise his sinister role. While we’ve come a long way with Computer Generated Imagery techniques over the past two decades, one has got to wonder how this is going to work out. For instance, everyone seemed excited about the return of Jeff Bridges to the grid when Tron: Legacy hit theaters…at least, until the younger digital version of Kevin Flynn was revealed on-screen.

Another hiccup to the cause is the intriguing detail of Peter Cushing’s discomfort with the Galactic Imperial officer outfit he had to wear while shooting A New Hope. The leather riding boots were allegedly so painful to wear, George Lucas allowed Cushing to wear slippers while filming his scenes, “forcing cameramen to shoot from the knees up or have him stand behind the Death Star conference table.”

In turn, “hours and hours of the horror movies” Cushing starred in are apparently being poured through so the crew can “recreate his legs and feet to produce realistic movements.” We have a little under a year and a half to find out if all the work will truly pay off as Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will hit theaters nationwide on December 16th, 2016.
