If you want to make a certain generation weep at the drop off the hat, mention The Iron Giant. A few words about Hogarth and his giant best friend and most ’90s kids will be in the fetal position, crying and moaning “Suuuuuupermaaaaan”. With a re-release coming this fall, nostalgia is at a fever pitch.
Brad Bird’s 1999 animated Cold War classic is one of the under-appreciated gems of the genre, and honestly one of Vin Diesel’s greatest performances. The man is the best in the business for winning hearts with a few simple words.
Fans aren’t the only ones who remember this film fondly: Vin Diesel has been vocal about his love as well. Earlier this week, Diesel posted this to his Facebook, and fans freaked out.
I have been very lucky to have played so many interesting characters… one of the first and one of my favorites is… the Iron Giant.
P.s. Don’t be surprised when you hear WB announce the sequel.
Whether or not this is wishful thinking or a sign of things to come, The Iron Giant is ripe for a sequel thanks to its open ended conclusion. Should they mess with something so great, or just leave it be?
