After more than three and a half decades as an actor, the brilliant and often overlooked William H. Macy makes his directorial debut with the film Rudderless. The film is an indie musical drama that stars Billy Crudup as a grieving father who starts a folk/rock/indie band. I wonder if Billy Crudup will ever look too old to play a rock star. In the trailer, one of his bandmates jokes about calling the band “The Old Man and the Sea” – a joke that might have worked better had Crudup aged even a little in the last 15 years. But no, he’s still attractive as fu*k.

The trailer is certain to spark some emotions in people who take pleasure in absorbing other people’s pain. Basically, this movie will appeal to anyone who enjoys going to movies to be sad… which is pretty much my favorite thing. Seriously, I don’t even watch comedies anymore. I only like sad movies. I wonder if there is a word in German for that? It’s not schadenfreude, because that’s taking pleasure in other people’s pain (although I’ll admit I do fine sadness to be quite pleasurable.) Maybe the word is schadenschade. I don’t know. Conversely, there must be a word for taking pain in other people’s pleasure because I definitely also have that. Freudenschade.
