This Chicago Restaurant Staple Transformed Into McDowell’s From ‘Coming To America’ For Halloween

Coming To America is a damn treasure of ’80s comedy, showcasing Eddie Murphy in his prime and capturing plenty of references along the way. One is the rivalry between the fictional McDowell’s and McDonald’s, two restaurants that seem to share more than just their first few letters. It’s a central part of the film and, now, thanks to The Weiner’s Circle in Chicago, it’s a reality.

The Block Club visited the Chicago staple to see the changes they made for Halloween and were pleasantly surprised to see that all of the stops were ignored, pulled out, and possibly shot, to be left in a shallow grave:

“It was definitely costly,” he said, declining to provide an amount. “We’re not going to make any money this week but we wanted to make a splash.”

As of Friday afternoon, Brooker said the employees at the McDonald’s across the street at 2635 N. Clark St. had yet to say anything to them.

The restaurant will be Wiener’s Circle again come Monday.

Over the years, the restaurant has become a Chicago staple thanks to its sassy staff, who are verbally abusive in a tongue-in-cheek kind of way.

The views from the restaurant are stellar, including the copycat “golden arcs” and likely a “Big Mick” inside on the menu. Not to mention that Louie Anderson’s Maurice is the employee of the month.

Also, just for looks, see how the restaurant is shaped without all the McDowell’s makeover.

And for a taste of the “real” thing, here’s a look back:
