‘Wolverine 3’ Is Most Likely The Last Time We’ll See Patrick Stewart As Professor X

We’ve known for some time now that Wolverine 3 will be Hugh Jackman’s swansong as the character, but it turns out it may be the end of another longtime X-Men actor’s tenure as well. Patrick Stewart has appeared as Professor X in nearly as many X-Men flicks as Jackman (six movies to Jackman’s eight), and it sounds as if Wolverine 3 will be his last go-around as the team’s leader.

When asked about his future as Professor X during a British ITV interview, Stewart has this to say:

“I would imagine this is probably the end of this franchise for me. But the thing about science fiction and fantasy is that you can never, ever say it’s the end, it’s over.”

So, this is probably the last we’ll see of Stewart as Professor X, but he’s leaving that door open a crack. It’s true, anything can happen with science fiction and fantasy, and if Fox cuts Stewart a truly fantastical check, I’m sure he’d come back for another cameo at least.

If this is the end of Stewart’s relationship with X-Men, will he at least be going out on a memorable note? It sounds like he will, as Stewart says he’s playing a “very different Charles Xavier, who’s nothing like the Charles Xavier you’ve seen in the past” in Wolverine 3. Consider me intrigued.

The still-untitled Wolverine 3 hit theaters March 3, 2017.
