Frozen gets all the credit (and literally all the money), but Wreck-It Ralph kicked off Disney’s recent hot streak. It was the animation studio’s first out-right classic since 2000’s The Emperor’s New Groove if you’re feeling generous, and 1998’s Mulan if you’re not, and I’m still not sure how it lost the Best Animated Feature Oscar to the underwhelming Tangled. Wreck-It Ralph — thanks to John C. Reilly and Sarah Silverman’s friendly voice acting, clever script, and inspired direction from Rich Moore, of The Simpsons and Futurama fame — is one of those highly rewatchable “if it’s on TV, I’m not changing the channel” movies. Soon, that two-hour block will become a four-hour marathon, because Disney officially announced Wreck-It Ralph 2 earlier today.
A sequel was inevitable, considering the original made nearly $500 million at the box office. (Reilly, in classic Dr. Steve Brule behavior, broke the news prematurely.) Concept art for Wreck-It Ralph 2 was released on Facebook Live that “shows Ralph going digital,” according to Entertainment Weekly, “standing with sidekick Vanellope over billboards parodying Google and Amazon.” As for the actual plot, all Reilly would tease is that “Ralph leaves the arcade and wrecks the Internet.” So, he creates Yahoo’s comments section?
Wreck-It Ralph 2 will be co-directed by Zootopia‘s Moore and Phil Johnston, who co-wrote the original with Frozen‘s Jennifer Lee. The original cast is expected to return, with the exception of Q-Bert. That greedy little bastard is holding out for @$%$&# more dollars. No one knows how much that is.
