The ‘Dark Phoenix Saga’ Will Likely Get A Do Over In The Next ‘X-Men’ Film

Warning: The following post contains some minor X-Men: Apocalypse spoilers.

X-Men: Apocalypse doesn’t hit theaters for another week, but the producers and stars of the movie just can’t keep their darn mouths shut about the next X-Men flick. There’s been plenty of hints and speculation that The Dark Phoenix Saga, so tragically handled in Brett Ratner’s X-Men: The Last Stand, might be getting a shot at redemption, and now X-Men producer Simon Kinberg and Apocalypse star Sophie Turner are pouring more fuel on the Dark Phoenix fire.

Jean’s Phoenix powers begin to manifest in a couple X-Men: Apocalypse scenes, and when Entertainment Weekly directly asked Kinberg if this was hinting at what might happen in the next X-Men movie, he gave a not-terribly-crafty answer.

“I definitely would love to take another stab at the Dark Phoenix story.”

Not a lot of ambiguity there! Sophie Turner also did some heavy-duty hinting…

“The seeds of Phoenix definitely are planted in there. She can’t control her powers unless she either fully stops them or lets them all loose, and that’s kind of Phoenix. I think in future movies to come we’ll definitely see more of that.”

X-Men movie mastermind Bryan Singer has said he wants the next movie to tackle the team’s interstellar adventures, which definitely points towards a Dark Phoenix redo. X-Men: The Last Stand‘s take on the Dark Phoenix was strictly Earthbound, but in the comics she’s an intergalactic threat, taking out entire planets and civilizations. Add in Kinberg and Turner’s comments to the mix and it seems pretty clear where things are going.

Of course, nothing is set in stone. X-Men: Apocalypse isn’t getting great reviews, and everything could end up changing if it flops. That said, if Singer and Kinberg manage to hang onto power, are you interested in seeing another take on The Dark Phoenix Saga? Or should they turn new ground instead?
