The ‘Zoom’ Trailer Features Cocaine-Filled Real Dolls And Comic Books Becoming Reality

Zoom has pretty much everything you want in a movie: Drug smuggling, real dolls, visits to Buffalo, and Allison Pill removing Gabriel Garcia Bernal’s genitals in a fit of pique. Well, all right, not everything you want in a movie, but pretty close.

There are two plots at once going on here. Pill is an artist who works at a Real Doll factory with Tyler Labine, who’s playing his usual lovable big dude. She stumbles across a bunch of cocaine hidden inside some dumbbells she ordered, and decides, with Labine’s help, to unload it in Buffalo. Meanwhile, the comic book she’s drawing about a glamorous movie star (Bernal) is coming to life, possibly because she decided to make her star character a Ken doll. The two worlds begin to collide as, inevitably, the drug deal falls apart… and there might be a third player we haven’t met yet in this trailer.

So, yeah, Zoom is a bit quirky. But the rotoscoped, colorful animation is a nice contrast to the somewhat dreary doll factory, and if nothing else, nobody can complain director Pedro Morelli — taking a bit of a left turn here from his sensitive 2013 drama Entre Nos — and writer Matt Hansen aren’t being creative. We’ll see just how much Sept. 2.
