For months Kanye West’s Twitter account stayed silent, with not so much as a retweet springing forth from it. But then a few days ago Twitter Yeezy slowly began to come out of hibernation. And then last night — WHOA!
In the wee hours of the morning, West went on what some have labeled as a “bizarre” and “insane” “Twitter rant” (Buzzfeed screengrabbed all the tweets in chronological order here) — sounding off about the state of creativity and education in the modern world, specifically about he believes creativity is being stifled in school these days. I presume he recently read the Steve Jobs bio and became inspired?
“We can collectively effect the world through design,” Kanye tweeted. “We need to pick up where Steve Jobs left off.” He added that schools are currently doing a horrible job at prepping “human beings for real life.”
Scoff at him if you want, but the dude has a point.
So to fight back against the oppression of creativity, West announced that he’s launching DONDA — a…well why don’t I just let Kanye explain it to you:
I am assembling a team of architects, graphic designers, directors musicians, producers, AnRs, writers, publicist, social media experts…app guys, managers, car designers, clothing designers, DJs, video game designers, publishers, tech guys, lawyers, bankers, nutritionist …doctors, scientist, teachers…DONDA will be comprised of over 22 divisions with a goal to make products and experiences that people want and can afford…I want to put creatives in a room together with like minds that are all waaaay doper than me…We want to help simplify and aesthetically improve everything we see hear, touch, taste and feel…To dream of, create, advertise and produce products driven equally by emotional want and utilitarian need.. To marry our wants and needs.
Listen, I know because it’s Kanye it’s easy to make jokes about this, but I kinda dig what he’s doing here and think he’s spot-on with his commentary about the ass-backwards ways we continue to educate children. And never forget that it’s the people who think they’re crazy enough to change the world who often do.
