Ranking The Viral YouTube Covers Of The 'Game Of Thrones' Theme

By / 06.06.12

Has your Game of Thrones withdrawal set in yet? It will soon enough. Just wait until you find yourself watching True Blood this Sunday. But what are we -- your humble servants -- here for if it's not to get you guys through the tough times? (If you answer is "working with no pants on": Also, yes.) All the Season 2 GIFs you can possibly handle are over in Josh's Season 2 Recap, so I'd like to send things in an audio direction.

As Game of Thrones has become more and more of a crossover hit in the last year and a half, countless renditions of the theme have appeared on YouTube. Some are rather brilliant. Some sound like Hodor playing a vuvuzela. We're going to concentrate on a handful of the former here.

I've gathered my seven favorites and ranked them (1-5) in the critical/imaginary categories of Originality, Ingenuity, and Listenability. Enjoy.

#7 - The 8-Bit Version

Originality: 1
Ingenuity: 4
Listenability: 2

The 8-bit cover is an internet staple and this really can only be listened to once. But still, nice effort.

#6 - The Metal Version

Originality: 2
Ingenuity: 2
Listenability: 4

There are PLENTY of metal versions on YouTube. This one is the most popular. Pretty decent listen if you're not too classy for some shredding.

#5 - The Stark Kids Sing Version

Originality: 3
Ingenuity: 1
Listenability: 4

From the Season 1 DVD commentary tracks. Sansa (Sophie Turner), Arya (Maisie Williams), and Bran (Isaac Hempstead) sing along with the theme. And people think GOT isn't capable of wholesome good times.

#4 - The Acoustic Version

Originality: 2
Ingenuity: 2
Listenability: 5

Kind of like the Metal version, but for people who have to listen to "More than Words" all the way through whenever it comes on.

#3 - The Floppy Disks Version

Originality: 5
Ingenuity: 5
Listenability: 2

Simply geektastic. But not exactly Ron Isley.

#2 - The Violin Version

Originality: 3
Ingenuity: 4
Listenability: 5

Electric AND Acoustic Violins. Who knew? This kid is a talent.

#1 - The Squeaky Dog Toys Version

Originality: 5
Ingenuity: 5
Listenability: 4

The scores probably don't even make sense at this point but I heart this so hard.
