Final Track: 7 Must-Hear Songs Of The Week

It’s impossible to cover each bit of new music that comes out during the week, so every Friday, we’ll be doing an end of the week music roundup. It’s called Final Track, and we’ll count off a few songs released during the week that are worth giving a listen to.

Today, we’ve got songs from the Avalanches (with David Berman), Slaughterhouse and Eminem, Devo, and more.

“A Cowboy Overflow of the Heart” by the Avalanches and David Berman

Australian sample freaks the Avalanches released one great album, 2000’s Since I Left You, but haven’t put out a full-length followup since. Indie rock legend David Berman recorded six good-to-great country-tinged rock albums with Silver Jews, before retiring from music in 2009. So, basically, the Internet exploded when out of the blue, “A Cowboy Overflow of the Heart,” a colloboration between the Avalanches and Berman, became a tangible thing, and not just something music nerds have wet dreams about. It’s a sparse spoken-word track and, honestly, a little disappointing considering the talent involved, but hopefully it’s a sign of good things to come from both Berman and the Avalanches.

“If the Shoe Don’t Fit” by the Jackson 5

In the months after Michael Jackson died in 2009, it seemed like every bit of music the man ever recorded, no matter how far from a finished product, was made public. And yet here we are three years later, with a previously unreleased Jackson 5 song. The eminently dancable “If the Shoe Don’t Fit” is a part of the two-disc set Come and Get It: The Rare Pearls, made up of early J5 recordings that’s due out August 28.

Hear it over at NPR.

“Just Can’t Get It Right” by RZA and Boy Jones

This week’s Wu-Wednesday release was a treat: “Just Can’t Get It Right,” a Spaghetti western-inspired track from RZA and Boy Jones, Ol’ Dirty Bastard’s son. Does ODB approve?

That means yes.

“Don’t Roof Rack Me, Bro! (Seamus Unleashed)” by Devo

Last week, Cajun wrote:

You may recall the sad plight of Seamus, Mitt Romney’s former dog that was infamously strapped to the roof of the Romney family car for a drive to Canada for vacation. You may also recall Devo, the punk/new wave band from the 70s and 80s famous for the song “Whip It.” Well now it looks like the worlds of Seamus and Devo will soon be colliding. (Via)

Here’s the collision.

“Throw That” by Slaughterhouse and Eminem

Reminsincent of Eminem’s D12 days.

“Fallout & Fire” by R. Ring

The first single from the Breeders’ Kelley Deal, sister of Kim, new side project.

A week later, still magnificent.
