The World’s Best Christmas Song Will Be Honored 25 Years After Its Release

By / 11.25.12

OK, the world’s second best Christmas song, after “What Can You Get A Wookie For Christmas (When He Already Owns A Comb).”

The Pogues’ ‘Fairytale Of New York’ has been made the bookies favourite to bag this year’s Christmas Number One Single.

This Christmas marks 25-years since the song, featuring the late singer Kirsty MacColl, was released and the band are celebrating the landmark with a special 25th anniversary re-release. Irish bookmakers, Paddy Power, has given odds of 25-1 for the song to be top of the Official UK Singles Chart come Christmas day, making it their favourite. The track will be re-released on iTunes in a song, video and instrumental bundle on November 26 and as a limited edition 7″ vinyl on December 3. (Via)

Christmas Number One Singles are, well, songs “that are top of the UK Singles Chart in the week in which Christmas Day falls,” including “Sound of the Underground” by Girls Aloud, “Hallelujah” by Alexandra Burke, and “Can We Fix It?” by Bob the Builder, for some reason. “Fairytale” ought to win because, unlike “Merry Christmas Everyone” by Shakin’ Stevens, it sounds good year-round, not just at Christmastime. Also, it’s fun to get plastered and shout out the lyrics, just the way Shane MacGowan intended.
